Kenya has achieved the highest electricity access rate in East Africa. The growth in access is supported by the accelerated investment in the distribution network and in renewable energy generation.

According to the latest World Bank Energy Progress Report, Kenya’s access to electricity at 56% as of the end of 2016, a figure which has however since increased to 73.42% as of April 2018, buoyed by various national electrification projects being undertaken by the government under the Last Mile Connectivity Project.

The Kenyan government plans to achieve universal access to electricity by 2020.

Kenya Power has so far connected 5.9 million customers to the grid through the ongoing national electrification program.

The country closest to Kenya in access to electricity in East Africa is Tanzania at 32.8%.
